Brief NYC Visit

I had a fun time visiting Nyc for just about 24 hours! 12/23-24. It was great seeing good friends.

Very rainy. Some even accused me of bringing the rain with me from Seattle :o But Seattle rain is more like a drizzle. This  rain in NYC was a total monsoon!

One of my friends showed me this yummy Japanese seaweed seasoning:

Then we went out for Queenspark Swizzles:

I love pebble ice!

On Xmas eve it reached a balmy 70 degrees. People were out in t-shirts. Madness.

Icy Precip!

It is an icy night here in NE PA!

And in the AM:

Gerlach Swarm

A swarm in the past 24 hours over in Gerlach, NV! Including a 4.4!

Heated Blanket

Rocco is convinced that it's pretty much the best thing ever:

Ornithology

Saw the coolest thing on the roof of my building this morning...

An actual hawk (sea hawk?) devouring some kind of bloody avian carcass. It is about a foot and a half in length to the end of its tail. And appears to be a total bad-ass.

I wish I had one of those clip-on telephoto lenses for my iPhone in moments like these!

Urban Planning

Seattle certainly has transportation woes. Since it is located on an isthmus, there are limitations as to what transportation solutions can be built in the city. The population is rapidly growing, and new residential buildings are popping up everywhere. The increase in population means an increase in automobiles because, as I can say from first hand experience, you're very limited in terms of doing things if you are dependent on buses and rental cars (a shortage of these is also happening). And monthly parking is a nightmare because there is a shortage of spots.

Right now there is a sort of battle between the car commuters and bus commuters with regard to how the Alaskan way viaduct (which runs along the western edge of the city) is reconfigured for traffic. Designated bus lanes would be great for these commuters, but it would also take away two car lanes. And don't forget about the cyclists! They want their lanes, too.

Seattle's current mass transit options are:

Buses - they still get stuck in the horrendous car traffic, they run infrequently, and they tend to have riders who blast music, litter and shoot up heroin (I've witnessed all of these things). Additionally, they are cramped and smell not so nice. Buses are also not dependable because they can come every 20 minutes, 30 minutes or 50 minutes depending on traffic and other issues. When you have infrequent service, the lateness is especially problematic for those who need to be at work by a certain time and don't want to have to leave an hour early to make up for unpredictable bus service.

Streetcar - aka the SLUT (south lake union trolley) that runs a short way from lake union down to 5th ave. Clean and pleasant in the inside, but its tracks are right on the same shared road as cars and buses. The city is actually extending its route to Capitol Hill so that's good. I think.

Light rail - runs from the airport to west lake center in downtown Seattle. Clean, fast, has its own track separate from cars and buses. But there is only one. Imagine only having the 7 train in Nyc. More of this would be great. But, Seattle being Seattle... It would take 25 years and a trillion dollars to build another line.

Monorail - the monorail is an elevated train that runs from the space needle/Seattle center down to west lake in downtown. It would be like a 20-minute walk... That's how short of a distance. However, the fact that it is elevated means this train is out of the way of the buses, cars and cyclists. Therefore I think the best mass transit option for Seattle is to build more monorail around the city. #moremonorail

Star Wars Fail

Cinerama is sold out for all Star Wars show times through 12/27. Today is 12/19. There goes that plan!

Exhausted

What would normally be a 15-minute drive today took 60 minutes. I'm exhausted from being stuck in traffic. Is that normal? I left work today at 4:40, which is just ten minutes later than usual. There was heavy rain, but could it be just the weather that caused such crazy traffic? I had flashbacks to gridlock rush hour on the nj ramp to/from the Lincoln tunnel.

Why Starbucks is No Longer My Morning Spot

Online orders! People can submit orders for pick-up via the sbux mobile app. So while you are waiting in a 6-person-deep line at the store, the single Barista is making 4 mobile orders. So it is really like a 10-person line. Why don't I order via the app you say? I did. Turns out the menu isn't very customizable. For example, you can't specify "double tall" or "non-fat milk" let alone "double tall non-fat no whip no sprinkle kids temp pumpkin spice latte."

So now I go to cherry street coffee, which is on the way to my car. As long as I beat the old lady walking club before 8am it's okay. Otherwise I'll get stuck waiting behind up to 10 people.

Cat Cafe

Seattle's first cat cafe is open in Wallingford! It's called Meowtropolitan. But apparently the cats are in a separate room than the coffee so you won't have to worry about cat hair in your coffee.

Huh? At 9am

At 9am on a Sunday...

All of the street parking spots are taken. This is very unusual. Wtf?

I walked into top pot for coffee and there was a long line. Wtf?

People are jingling. Wtf?

Turns out there was some jingle bell run in downtown Seattle. Apparently they hold these things at 6am or something because everyone was done by 9am. It's a jingling swarm!

Thunderstorm

Finally! A thunderstorm! This morning around 6am the boom of thunder woke me up (and I'm a heavy sleeper!). There was great lightning, too. It had been months and months since I had last seen a thunderstorm out here. Too bad I was so tired I fell back asleep until 7 :|

2.5 Earthquake in Seattle

A 2.5 earthquake just hit right in downtown Seattle at 12:11pm! I'm 3 miles away from it right now and unfortunately I did not feel it. The whole area has been pretty shaky lately, especially a bit north of Seattle with dozens of small (up to 2 magnitude) quakes in the last week or two. Perhaps a precursor of things to come!

Update:

The epicenter was changed to just 3 blocks away from my apartment by 1st avenue and Lenora, which Is where I park. Bummer I wasn't home. I wonder if Rocco felt it!

Update: another earthquake! Small one right by pioneer square in downtown Seattle. A 2.16 magnitude at 1:27pm.

Update: A third earthquake! This time in nearby Issaquah. 2.43 magnitude at 8:38pm. All of these quakes are by the Seattle fault line (SFL).

Freezing Fog

I encountered a weather phenomenon called freezing fog while driving to and from Portland this weekend. It was like a big cloud that turned everything white.

Mt Hood

Went for a hike in Mt Tabor Park in Portland. At the top is a nice view of the snowy Mt Hood

New Weather Alert

Air Stagnation Advisory. Now that's a new one!

Magnolia Park

A view of the Puget Sound looking northwest at the Olympic Mountains from Magnolia Park with a bald eagle in the top right tree:

Looking south at a hazy and slightly askew Mt Rainier:

Seagull Fight Fest

There is some kind of raucous seagull festivity on the roof outside of my window. One of them brought a loaf of bread and the rest are fighting. It's very, um, squawky up here.

Two gulls moving in on the one with the bread:

Fight with hissing:

This is actually quite fascinating.

Freezing

This whole 44 degrees thing (minus windchill) is not cool. Yet somehow people still go to the outdoor mall villages. Most of the malls out here are outdoors, which is nice in the summer. Must be a west coast thing.

Sipping my extra hot caramel macchiato...

Lowland Snow

It's a long shot, but there could be some snow in the lowland areas tonight/tomorrow am. Yes, I get excited about the possibly of snow. It has been a while! I think I haven't seen snow since last December in PA...

Edmonds

Today I drove up to Edmonds!

Cute little village of a town with little shops, restaurants, a holiday market and a ferry.

Olympic Mountains/ the peninsula in the background, above.

Waterfront Cafe w cafe vita coffee near the ferry terminal.

The center of downtown, above

Very walkable. There's even an art supply store :)

Red Twig restaurant with nice outdoor seating. It's 44 degrees so it's a little too chilly for that right now!

I've fallen in love with the Edmonds Bookshop. Could spend hours in there.

Ferry

The ferry takes a very long time to unload and load. Like 45 minutes.

Observing the Edmonds -> Kingston ferry terminal

Clay End

So having just gone to a handful of classes, I have effectively resigned from my wheel pottery class. This morning I liberated my big bag of clay and tools from the studio. I'm really not a fan of the wheel or clay in general though I may try a hand-building class in the future.

Carnation

So.... Yeah, I won't be moving to Carnation.

I kind of liked it out there, but with the crazy rain last week apparently Carnation turns into a swamp. Poor little cows!

Ballard Blocks

In Ballard, people just park in the middle of the street between the lanes. Madness!

Not a Car Person

I got my license plates in the mail! Feels good to be all Washingtonian. Apparently all you need is a Phillips screwdriver to put them on. I did get a very suspicious/suspect look from someone at 8am in the parking lot this morning. Guess it looks sketchy to do that sort of thing.

I also noticed that my front tire looked low so I took my Tiguan to Les Schwab after work today. Apparently I'm an idiot because the front tires are supposed to look low. The engine weight and tilt of an SUV do that. At least they didn't charge me for stupidity :)

Gray and That Time of Year

Happy Halloween! Today it's gray (yay) and rainy (boo). It's also so windy that Rocco doesn't like going for a walk because he just gets blown all over the place.

Anyway, it's that time of year where I start taking vitamin D supplements--woo-hoo!

Rain Driving

I don't like it.

Took me 80 minutes to get from seattle to Everett today to pick up my second set of car keys. I really need to switch to a closer dealership. Can I even do that?

The Series Continues

Rocco at Gas Works Park:

It was a beautiful day to be in the park. Rocco really liked sniffing the grass, saying hi to people and taking in the views. Don't think he noticed the seaplanes, but he definitely checked out the water and big sculptures. He walked all up the way up kite hill!

Actual Car

I finally got my Tiguan today! But it is not the one I was expecting because of the clockspring recall mucking up the whole thing.

2015 pre-owned certified Tiguan in dark blue AKA Seahawks blue. I had wanted black but this one came w a bunch more features (For the same price) so I decided to take it!

Good Morning
